The report reflects the development in Belarus of a national system for regulating access to genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, as well as the sharing of benefits arising from their use.
A key step was the adoption of the Law of the Republic of Belarus “On the Management of Genetic Resources” No. 356-Z dated March 5, 2024, which regulates:
- ✓
procedure for granting access to genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge; - ✓
obtaining prior informed consent; - ✓
conclusion of mutually agreed terms between providers and users of genetic resources and/or associated traditional knowledge; - ✓
the distribution of benefits from their use.
The publication of the first national report confirms Belarus’s fulfillment of its international obligations under the Nagoya Protocol and the development of a national system for regulating access to genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, as well as the sharing of benefits arising from their use.
