Checkpoint for monitoring the utilization of genetic resources of the Republic of Belarus

Support to Preparation of the Interim National Report on the Implementation of the Nagoya Protocol in Belarus

Project duration: 30 March 2018 – 30 June 2019

Project objective: Assist country-Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-Sharing in preparing and making timely submission of their Interim National Reports on measures that each Party has taken to implement the Protocol.

Submit an Interim National Report on the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol in the Republic of Belarus in line with Article 29 of the denoted Protocol and pursuant to the international obligations of our country.

Through Access and Benefit-Sharing Clearing-House, the Parties monitor the implementation of their obligations under the Nagoya Protocol, as well as help assess the Protocol’s effectiveness and identify problems and challenges in its realization in the territory of each Party to the Protocol.

Project targets:

  • Collecting exhaustive and sound information on the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol’s provisions in the territory of the Republic of Belarus
  • Ensuring participation of a broad audience of experts and stakeholders
  • Holding activities aimed to raise awareness of the issues related to access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization.

Project outcomes:

With participation of experts and stakeholders involved in the project, exhaustive and sound information on the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol’s provisions in the territory of the Republic of Belarus collected and two activities aimed to raise awareness of the issues related to access to genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization (in April and December 2018) held.

The Interim National Report on the Nagoya Protocol implementation in the Republic of Belarus in line with Article 29 of the Protocol prepared and included in the Global Access and Benefit-Sharing Clearing- House.

Belarus hosted the Regional Round Table event of the Bio-Bridge Initiative on 26-28 February 2018

On 26-28 February 2018, Minsk hosted the Regional Round Table event dedicated to the Bio-Bridge Initiative of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asian Republics. The meeting was organized in Belarus by the Secretariat initiative and the National Coordination Centre on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing, the Institute of Genetics and Cytology, NAS of Belarus, provided organizational support.
