“Tree Beekeeping ― Binding the Times” is a unique album-book, the 6th edition of the series “Cultural Heritage of Belarus” released by the Publishing House “Four Quarters” under the Social Project “Belarusian Cultural Heritage” of the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus. The book is about the ancient practice of the extraction of wild bee honey and wax from log-hives in the forest. In some regions of Belarus, tree beekeeping has been preserved to this day and tree beekeepers pass on their secrets to their successors. This “living” traditional practice reminds people of the necessity to live in harmony with nature and to be grateful for those gifts that it generously shares for the sake of their health and well-being. The value of this practice lies in its direct connection with the preservation of the ecological balance, the vital activity of local ecosystems, and therefore, the sustainable development of the society.
In Belarus, “Forest tree beekeeping on the example of Lielchytsy District of Homiel Region” has a status of historical and cultural value. In 2019, the Belarusian and Polish experts sent the materials to UNESCO for the element “Culture of Tree Beekeeping in Poland and Belarus” to be included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The book is published in Belarusian, Russian, English and Polish languages.
