NATIONAL COORDINATION CENTRE ON ACCESS TO GENETIC RESOURCES AND BENEFIT-SHARING

Checkpoint for monitoring the utilization of genetic resources of the Republic of Belarus

The Lead Software Engineer of the National Coordination Centre on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing, the Institute of Genetics and Cytology, NAS of Belarus, Ms. Irina Dubinina, upon recommendation of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, took part in the Global Capacity-Building Workshop on Operationalizing Access and Benefit-Sharing National Frameworks under the Nagoya Protocol. The workshop was organized by the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and the ABS Clearing-House and was hosted from 30 September to 3 October in Bonn, Germany.

During the workshop, its participants had a chance to share experience and best practices with regard to capacity building to achieve Goal C of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention. Seventy participants from 36 countries and 11 international organizations discussed institutional frameworks and administrative and other measures proposed by countries to ensure access and benefit-sharing during the utilization of genetic resources, as well as monitoring their use, through the application of simple and practical procedures supported by developed information systems.

The workshop brought together experts in the field of access and benefit-sharing, partners and relevant stakeholders from across the globe to establish the level of progress achieved in this area; to ensure experience-sharing; to facilitate cooperation, peer-to-peer learning on addressing challenges arising during the practical implementation of access and benefit-sharing mechanisms; for the development and implementation of user-friendly procedures, information management and monitoring the use of genetic resources.

The workshop included both plenary sessions and breakout group sessions and topical presentations; group exercises and discussions. The working language of the workshop was English.
