Transfer of 50 birdlings of the aquatic warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola) to create a new population of this globally threatened species in the territory of Lithuania

Within the framework of the International Technical Assistance Project: LIFEMagniDucatusAcrola, LIFE15NAT/LT/001024 “Stepping stones towards ensuring long-term favourable conservation status of the aquatic warbler in Lithuania” of November 2, 2017 No. 2/17/000847 and in accordance with the Nagoya Protocol requirements, the Republic of Belarus has transferred  50 birdlings of the aquatic warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola) to create a new population of this globally threatened species in the territory of Lithuania.

Catching of birdlings was carried out in the territory of the Republican Landscape Reserve “Zvanets” under a permit issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus.

Compliance with the requirements of the Nagoya Protocol for the transfer of genetic resources (obtaining of a prior informed consent from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and concluding of mutually agreed terms between the provider and the user of genetic resources) is confirmed by the Certificate of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of May 30, 2018 No. 10-2-36/2578.

Despite the fact that the administrative legal mechanism for compliance with the Nagoya Protocol in the Republic of Belarus is at its development stage, thanks to the cooperation of the National Coordination Centre on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection the country ensures that the fulfillment of international obligations are met.
