Checkpoint for monitoring the utilization of genetic resources of the Republic of Belarus

On 31 July 2018, a reporting event “National legislation on access to genetic resources and traditional knowledge associated with them. Liability measures for incompliance with the Nagoya Protocol provisions” under the UNDP-GEF International Technical Assistance Project “Strengthening of human resources, legal frameworks and institutional capacities to implement the Nagoya Protocol in the Republic of Belarus” of March 30, 2018 No. 2/18/000874 took place. The event was organized by the National Coordination Centre on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-sharing of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology, NAS of Belarus.

As part of the project, experts’ reports on the work done were heard and approved, including an expert report analysing international approaches, national legislation of the Republic of Belarus and legal experience of other states with regard to the legal regulation of access to genetic resources stipulated by the Project Component I. The linguistics and folkloristics expert reports were also heard as part of the Project Component III on traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources and capacity-building of indigenous and local communities to ensure the Nagoya Protocol implementation.

The Project Implementation Unit reported on the project progress and the experience of the Republic of Belarus gained in the transfer of genetic resources, taking into account the Nagoya Protocol requirements. There was also a discussion on possible liability measures for incompliance with the Nagoya Protocol provisions.
