On 22 May 2019, within the framework of the International Technical Assistance Project “Strengthening of human resources, legal frameworks and institutional capacities to implement the Nagoya Protocol in the Republic of Belarus” of March 30, 2018 No. 2/18/000874, a workshop entitled “Biological diversity and traditional knowledge related to the genetic resources’ use – the basis for the conservation of natural resources and human health” will be held in the Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve. The workshop is timed to the International Day for Biological Diversity proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1995. The 2019 theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity is “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health”.
During the workshop, it is planned to analyze and discuss the results on the collaboration of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, the National Coordination Center on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing, and the National Coordination Biosafety Centre of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology, NAS of Belarus, aimed at the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Cartagena and Nagoya Protocols and the ensured cooperation with other environmental conventions; informing on the progress of the International Technical Assistance Project “Strengthening of human resources, legal frameworks and institutional capacities to implement the Nagoya Protocol in the Republic of Belarus” and gaining experience in the transfer of genetic resources, as well as on the activities related to the inventory of our country’s genetic resources using DNA barcoding techniques carried out by the Republican DNA Bank of a human, animals, plants and microorganisms.
